Girls’ Night Out

This program has sold out!

Costume historian Lois Valeo will return to the Museum of Old Newbury on Wednesday, November 6 for the latest installment of her annual "Girls' Night Out" series, focusing on the fashion history of shoes. This program is sponsored in part by the Institution for Savings.

From handmade silk slippers to factory-produced stilettos, shoes have long been an indispensable component of a fashionable outfit.  According to Valeo, “it has nothing to do with need.  Practicality and comfort are beside the point.  In her heart, a woman craves an exceptional shoe!”

The lecture will explore how this most basic accessory has come to hold such aesthetic importance, and will address the influence of shoes as powerful indicators of class, status, style, and passion.  The presentation will also feature a selection of shoes from the museum’s collection, dating from the 18th to 20th centuries.

Lois Valeo is a retired instructor in fashion history at Southern New Hampshire University.  She is a member of the Museum of Old Newbury’s Board of Directors, and cares for the museum’s extensive collection of historic clothing and accessories.
