Highlights from the Chris Snow Photograph Collection

  • Firehouse Center for the Arts 1 Market Square Newburyport, MA 01950 United States (map)

On Thursday, October 24, 2019 the Museum of Old Newbury will present “Highlights from the Christopher Snow Photograph Collection” with historian Ghlee Woodworth. The program will be held at the Firehouse Center for the Arts and will begin at 7:00 PM.

In summer 2014, the museum acquired the extensive photograph collection of local antiques dealer Chris Snow. Snow spent decades assembling the collection of about 2,000 photographs, glass plate negatives, and photo albums chronicling Newbury and Newburyport history for over a century. All aspects of the communities’ history are represented including local landmarks, streetscapes, waterfront and maritime views, clubs and organizations, parades, fires, school portraits, churches, public buildings, military events, and rural landscapes. Local photographers H.P. Macintosh, Selwyn Reed and others will be featured.

Museum volunteers worked for two years sorting and identifying the photographs and providing metadata. The collection was then sent to Digital Commonwealth in Boston, MA where it was digitized and made available for research.

Presenter Ghlee Woodworth is author of Tiptoe Through the Tombstones about Newburyport’s Oak Hill Cemetery, and creator of the Clipper Heritage Trail, for which she received an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History.

Funding for this program was provided by the Institution for Savings. The program is free but tickets are required.
