142nd Annual Meeting: History of the Bartlet Mall

  • Museum of Old Newbury 98 High Street Newburyport United States (map)

The Bartlet Mall is one of the oldest public grounds in the city and has always been a focal point of the community. In the late 19th century, noted landscape architect Charles Eliot was instrumental in the design for the Mall.  The mall and courthouse were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and continue to be community treasures today.

Charles Griffin is an architect and has worked in Newburyport since 1987.  He and his wife Gillian restored the Old Gaol compound on Auburn Street, and subsequently constructed four private residences that represent how classical architecture came to define Newburyport.  Griffin is passionate about restoration of the historic Bartlet Mall.
