A Brush With History: Bubbly & Blooms

  • Museum of Old Newbury 98 High Street Newburyport, MA 01950 (map)

Sip some bubbly and join professional artist Karen Nastuk to create your own painted masterpiece inspired by the work of Newburyport's Laura Coombs Hills.  With step-by-step instruction from an experienced and talented artist, you’re sure to both have fun and go home with a treasured keepsake.

Laura Coombs Hills, 20th century artist and native Newburyporter, is best known for her floral pastels.  After attending art school and traveling to Europe, Hills made a name and a career for herself painting ivory portrait miniatures in the late 1800s.  Later, Hills turned to pastels as her medium of choice, and her vibrant use of color and balanced, unique compositions made her work both original and wildly popular.

The Museum of Old Newbury's collections include a number of Laura Coombs Hills paintings, including those shown below.  At "Bubbly and Blooms," you will create your own painting based on these iconic works from our collection.
